How to choose your ceiling fan:
Size of Ceiling fan
You can find a fan to fit just about any space in the home. The key to selecting the right size fan for a room is to match the room’s dimensions to the fan’s blade span, which refers to the size of the fan from blade tip to blade tip.
A 32-inch fan will cover up to 80 square feet; a 42-inch fan, 80-120 square feet; a 44-inch fan, 120-144 square feet, and a 52-inch fan works well for 144 or more square feet. In rooms larger than 300-square feet, you’ll require two or more 52-inch fans to generate sufficient air circulation. And in very small rooms, the fan should be small enough that the blade tips are at least 15 inches from all walls.
Type of blade
Fan blades can be wooden (timber, plywood or MDF), stainless steel, aluminium, or plastic. In testing we’ve found there’s generally no difference in cooling ability between the different blade materials. Fans with wooden or plastic blades tend to be quieter, making them more suitable for bedrooms
There is ceiling fans with 1, 2, 3 up to 5 blades available, there is little difference in performance so it’s about the design you prefer
Energy Efficiency
Most ceiling fans use the same amount of power as a 60watt light bulb, which costs about 3c per hour, compared to 2000+watts to run your AC
Can save up to 40% on your power costs using your ceiling fan with your AC
Ceiling fans don’t actually lower the room temperature, but instead work the same way that a breeze does: by moving air around and over your skin, which cools you by accelerating perspiration evaporation.
They can be an effective and low-cost alternative to portable air conditioners and reverse-cycle air conditioners. There are also plenty of well-designed options that can actually enhance the look of a room – a retro-style ceiling fan might suit your home much better than a bulky, wall-mounted air conditioner unit.
Ceiling fans can also be reversible, meaning in winter you can change the blade to anti-clockwise which pushes warm air up against the ceiling and down the walls proven to reduce heating costs by up to 10%.
CONSIDERATIONS
Ceiling height
If you have ceilings above 3 metres, you may require an extension rod. All Beacon Lighting ceiling fans come with an optional extension rod, our standard size is 900mm but you can easily cut them to suit your requirements.
Recommended height
Any ceiling fan should be at least 2.1 metres from the floor to the blades of the fan and at least 300mm from the ceiling.
How to turn it on
Rather than operate with pull cords like older ceiling fans, newer models generally feature wall controls that enable you to turn the fan on and off and adjust its speed. Some fans also have a remote control that allows you to make adjustments from anywhere in the room.
Now that you’re armed with all of the facts regarding buying a ceiling fan, you can choose the best model for keeping you cool and comfortable.
Integrated light
This can be a useful feature – if you rely on an existing light fitting mounted above the fan, you could end up with a strobe lighting effect. Great for parties, less so for relaxing on a warm evening. However, some of the fans that have integrated light as an option when you buy the product won’t support the adding of a light at a later date. So if you think you may need a light, it might be a good idea to get it just in case.
